DAN SMITH - from Santa Clara, California
Mr. Dan Smith, a long-time Musician, Educator, Consultant, Adjudicator & Pageantry Professional, holds a BA Degree from San Jose’ State University an MA Degree from the University of Northern Colorado, and is a member of National Association for Music Education (NAfME), California Music Educators Association (CMEA) & Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
As an Arranger, Visual Designer, Clinician & Instructor he has helped numerous school and community musical & pageantry programs produce State, Regional and National Champions. His own Bands have performed in such nationally-televised events as the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade & Band Fest (twice), the Fiesta Bowl Parade & Pageant of Bands (twice), the King Orange Parade & Great Bands of the Orange Bowl, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It was during his tenure as Director of Bands that his Independence High School 76th Cavalry Band from San Jose, California won the 1981 Bands of America National Championship.
He is a co-founder of the Western Band Association, and has been a co-author of many Pageantry Scoring Systems used throughout much of the Country.
Mr. Smith has now been involved in Music & Pageantry for over 50 years, and has over 40 years experience as an Adjudicator of Concert Band, Marching Band, Drum & Bugle Corps, and Winter Guard & Winter Percussion Festivals & Competitions throughout the United States & Canada (including the World Championships for both Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International). He has long been actively involved in training & assigning Judges for Fall & Winter Competitions throughout the West. And, he is in constant demand as a conductor, clinician, and consultant.
An accomplished French Horn player & Middle Brass specialist, Mr. Smith continues to be an active performer in several Bay Area musical ensembles including the well known Ohlone Community Band and the Mission Peak Brass Band. He is a Charter Member of the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps, and is a former Instructor of the SCV “A” Corps, Vanguard Cadets & SCV Alumni Corps.
Mr. Smith is a US Air Force Veteran and a proud father, with one of his sons serving in the US Navy onboard the USS Carl Vinson CVN-70, and his other son and daughter-in-law both serving in the US Air Force stationed at Eielson AFB outside Fairbanks, Alaska (along with his two grandsons).
